APA 7th Referencing

Introduction

When conducting research for your assessments using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools, it is essential to acknowledge and properly reference your use of these tools. When utilising ChatGPT or similar AI tools, carefully examine the model’s output and its sources for relevance, accuracy, and authenticity. Consider seeking out original or primary sources, studying that research, and then paraphrasing or quoting from these sources instead of solely depending on the model's interpretations or paraphrasing. Tools such as Grammarly or QuillBot (if allowed) also require acknowledgment.

If you are a Higher Education student, consult your Subject Delivery Schedules, which outline the use of AI and specify which tools are approved and permitted. Some subjects may not allow the use of AI.

If you are a VET student, please seek guidance from your teacher.

*As the area of AI is evolving, our guidelines may be updated at any time. Currently, the latest is July 2025 - V1.

APA has adapted its examples for in-text citations and references for AI tools from the reference template for software in Chapter 10 - Section 10.10 of the Publication Manual. The WAI guidelines also follow this recommendation. The template can also be adapted to note the use of other large language models, algorithms, and similar software apart from the GenAI tools annotated in our guidelines.
